Dogs in their prime. Yes, healthy ageing is possible
Dogs are getting older and older, and for their owners this means paying extra attention to the specific care that an elderly animal needs. This topic is covered in the latest episode of Biolab Cast ConectadosThe topic is "Longevity, elderly dogs and a population living longer and longer". The conversation includes the participation of the veterinarian, master and doctor in animal nutrition and technical manager of Avert Saúde Animal, Dr. Wandréa de Souza Mendes. The program, presented by psychiatrist Dr. Luiz Dieckmann and neurologist Dr. Paula Dieckmann, is an initiative of Biolab Farmacêutica, with the support of Avert® Biolab Saúde Animal, its animal health division.
Dr. Wandréa points out that proper nutrition is essential for dogs to live longer, as it helps to prevent disease and ensure physical and mental well-being. "As dogs get older, they become more susceptible to joint, digestive and cognitive problems. The right diet undoubtedly helps prevent many problems," she explains. She suggests feeds developed specifically for elderly dogs, formulated to meet the nutritional needs of this stage of life.
"The relationship between pet and guardian intensifies even more as the dog gets older," says Dr. Paula, stressing the importance of seeking support to deal with the aging process. She also discusses the emotional aspects of this phase, both for dogs and their owners. "Aging brings challenging behavioral changes, especially when owners face the loss of vitality in their pets," she says.
In addition, Dr. Wandréa emphasizes the need to adapt the home environment to provide comfort and safety for the animal, promoting its quality of life. "We must be attentive to dogs' physical and psychological needs, creating a peaceful and comfortable environment," she emphasizes. She also stresses the importance of regular visits to the vet to monitor the pet's health. This preventative care, combined with moderate exercise and cognitive stimulation, is fundamental to ensuring that elderly dogs live active and happy lives for longer.
