Orange December: a month to raise awareness about the skin
With the arrival of summer and the vacations, the concern with skin protection must be redoubled. With this in mind, the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) created the Orange December campaign to raise awareness of skin cancer. With this in mind, Biolab Cast brought two renowned dermatologists, Dr. Andrea Taira and Dr. Daniela Pimentel, members of the SBD, to talk about the different problems and solutions for routine care of the largest organ of the human body. The program, presented by psychiatrist Jairo Bouer, also featured a special appearance by influencer and Venus Podcast presenter Yasmin Yassine.
The program covered the importance of a routine of care, with the use of suitable products and sun protection, to prevent spots, premature ageing and, in the long term, skin cancer, which is responsible for 33% of cancer diagnoses in Brazil. The Brazilian Consensus on Photoprotection recommends that sunscreen be reapplied every 2 hours while exposed to the sun, or after entering water, such as swimming pools and the sea.
Dr. Daniela Pimentel brought examples of studies showing that 80% of the sun we get during our lives is before the age of 20. "For this reason, we are more concerned when assessing patients in their 60s and 70s. At this age, the chances of developing skin cancer are higher, as these people have probably had years of excessive exposure to the sun, without protection and without the knowledge we have today," concludes the dermatologist.
Presenter Yasmin Yassine said that she started taking care of her skin at an early age, as she developed atopic dermatitis as a child. The specialists emphasized the importance of prevention from childhood, highlighting hydration and sun protection from the age of six months - before that, wearing clothes with an adequate protection factor is essential. According to Dr. Andrea Taira, the skin requires constant attention, especially in the case of conditions such as atopic dermatitis, which affects up to 20% of children and 7% of adults.
"Moisturizing is essential to treat and maintain healthy skin in cases of atopic dermatitis. People with this condition are more prone to viral diseases and contact dermatitis, as the skin barrier is compromised," explains Dr. Andrea.
Another problem addressed in the episode that deserves attention is acne. "Although it's common in adolescence, acne is a disease and needs to be treated correctly to avoid the dreaded scars," warns Dr. Daniela about this condition that affects up to 85% of young people, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
"Today, even with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I try to fit skin care into my commitments. It's important to create this awareness of self-care, so I decided to include it in my schedule," adds Yasmin Yassine.
