Daiana Garbin- Health care has become increasingly important in Brazil and is essential for ensuring longevity, quality of life and the treatment of various conditions that affect the body.

However, some diseases develop silently and can go unnoticed, even by those who maintain a health care routine. This was the central topic of discussion in the March episode of Biolab Cast, a podcast hosted by journalist Daiana Garbin, with the participation of Dr. Marcos Vinicius Bolivar Malachias, a cardiologist with a post-doctorate from Harvard Medical School, former president of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology and university professor, and Duda Dantas, a digital influencer, medical student and who has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since she was 8 years old.

According to Dr. Bolivar, among the various diseases classified as silent, cardiovascular diseases require special attention. "Cardiovascular diseases are currently the main cause for concern in Brazil and worldwide. They are responsible for more than 30% of registered deaths, and more than half of these deaths could be avoided or postponed with proper prevention," explains the specialist.

In this context, identifying risk groups is fundamental to preventing silent diseases. "Within cardiovascular diseases, there are specific risk groups. The first step to prevention is to analyze family history, checking for recurrent cases of cardiovascular disease or factors such as Type 2 Diabetes and changes in cholesterol. In addition, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking and stress are factors that aggravate heart disease," warns Dr. Bolivar.

In these cases, awareness is essential. According to Duda Dantas, it's common for patients to be afraid to investigate symptoms, which hinders the effectiveness of treatment: "Many patients don't want to receive a diagnosis, so as not to be seen as sick, and think that delaying treatment will be beneficial. In reality, the opposite is true: by being diagnosed and treated early, it is possible to avoid the progression of silent diseases and their possible complications. In many cases, such as hepatic steatosis, the patient may not show any symptoms, and the progression of the disease occurs over time."
