It is indicated for the acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia and other psychoses in adults, in which positive symptoms (e.g. delusions, hallucinations, altered thinking, hostility and mistrust) and/or negative symptoms (e.g. diminished affect, emotional/social isolation and poor language) are prominent. Olanzapine also relieves secondary affective symptoms, commonly associated with schizophrenia and related disorders. Olanzapine is effective in maintaining clinical improvement during ongoing treatment in adult patients who have responded to initial treatment. Olanzapine is indicated, in monotherapy or in combination with lithium or valproate, for the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder in adult patients, with or without psychotic symptoms, and with or without rapid cycling. Olanzapine is indicated to prolong the time of euthymia and reduce the recurrence rates of manic, mixed or depressive episodes in bipolar disorder.
