Risperidone is a medication used to treat so-called psychoses (e.g. schizophrenia). This means that it has a favorable effect on a number of disorders related to thinking, emotions and/or activities, such as: confusion, hallucinations, perception disorders (e.g. hearing voices of someone who is not there), unusual suspiciousness, isolation from society, being excessively introverted, etc.
Risperidone also improves anxiety, tension and the mental state altered by these disorders.
Risperidone can be used for both sudden onset (acute) and long-term (chronic) conditions.
In addition, after the symptoms have been relieved, risperidone is used to keep the disorders under control, i.e. to prevent relapses.
Risperidone is also used, for up to 12 weeks, in dementia related to moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease, specifically to control agitation, aggression or psychotic symptoms (such as believing things that aren't true, or seeing, feeling or hearing things that aren't there).
Another condition for which you may receive risperidone is mania, characterized by symptoms such as elevated, expansive or irritable mood, increased self-esteem, reduced need for sleep, pressure to speak, accelerated thinking, reduced attention and concentration or impaired judgement, including inappropriate or aggressive behaviour.
Risperidone can also be used to treat irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents, including symptoms of aggression towards others, such as deliberate self-harm, bouts of anger and distress and rapid mood swings.
