If you have coronary artery disease (CAD), diabetes, have had a stroke or other vascular disease (regardless of your blood cholesterol levels), simvastatin can prolong your life by reducing the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) or stroke, reducing the need for surgery by improving blood flow to the legs and essential organs such as the heart and reducing the need for hospitalization for chest pain (known as angina).
Simvastatin lowers blood cholesterol levels. Cholesterol can cause coronary artery disease (CAD) by narrowing the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the heart. This clogging, or hardening of the arteries, is called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can cause chest pain (known as angina) and myocardial infarction (heart attack). Simvastatin also slows down the progression of atherosclerosis and reduces the development of further atherosclerosis.
